Hello World! Embracing my New Adventure as an Author

Updated: Nov 16, 2024

There’s something special about writing—transforming thoughts into words that connect with readers. In this post, I want to share my journey, my passion for writing Children's Books, and the thrilling adventure that lies ahead!

The Spark of Inspiration

Every writer has that moment when they know they are meant to create. For me, it happened when I was 16 years old. But I didn't start writing until 2022. I was inspired by my son Alex and his friends who were searching for stories in which they could see themselves.

My Journey Begins

As I stepped into this new adventure, I sought advice from fellow writers and local literary groups. I quickly learned that writing thrives in community. Attending workshops and open mic nights helped me form connections that fueled my creativity and pushed me to write regularly.

One lesson stood out: embracing feedback is key to growth. For example, after participating in a critique group, I refined a story that previously felt flat. The feedback allowed me to elevate the narrative and ultimately led to its acceptance for publication in a local literary magazine. I encourage you to share your work with others, as every piece of feedback is a chance to improve.

Finding My Voice

On my path to becoming an author, I recognized the importance of finding my unique voice. Writing is personal, and every author has a story to tell. Authenticity resonates with readers. I was encouraged by other aspiring authors to explore various forms until I discovered what truly speaks to my heart.

Writing uplifting books for children, especially those of African heritage, was inspired by my own ethnicity and the lack of representation. After my son noticed the absence of characters who looked like him in school books, I discovered that only 6.8% of characters were Black in a 2023 survey. This motivated me to create inclusive books for all children, and I remain committed to this cause.

The Writing Process

Every author has their own writing routine, and mine has changed over time. I used to expect perfection in my first draft, but now I know the magic happens when I let creativity flow without fear of mistakes.

Here’s a glimpse into my process:

  1. Brainstorming: I capture all ideas, no matter how chaotic. This is when my imagination thrives.

  2. Outline: I create a basic outline to keep my writing focused and directed.

  3. First Draft: I dive in, prioritizing getting the words down rather than worrying about perfection.

  4. Revisions: Here, I refine my work, polishing it until it feels cohesive and genuine.

  5. Feedback: I share drafts with trusted friends or writing groups, valuing their insights before finalizing my manuscript.

Building a Local Community

In my journey as a local author, I have come to appreciate the supportive community of writers around me. Local bookstores often host events showcasing authors, and writing groups are flourishing. These gatherings have been invaluable, providing opportunities to share work and connect with others who understand the writer's experiences.

The Road Ahead

As I embrace this new adventure, I feel a deep sense of purpose. My love for writing continues to grow, and I cherish the chance to share my stories. I know the journey will have challenges and triumphs, but every moment is worth it. Currently, my main challenge is mastering marketing, as books cannot be sold without it.

I plan to keep improving my craft, set goals, and explore self-publishing options. My hope is to inspire others to pursue their dreams. Writing has the power to change lives—not just for the author, but for everyone who reads.

Join Me on This Journey

To everyone reading this post, I want to say a warm "hello" and invite you along on my journey as an author. Writing is an exciting journey, filled with stories waiting to be told. My passion for crafting words drives me, and I hope to inspire you to embrace your creativity, whether through writing or another form of expression.

The world is full of stories; let’s embark on this adventure together! Feel free to share your thoughts, experiences, or tips for fellow writers in the comments below. Here’s to the stories yet to be written!
